105 individuals and 35 unions /movements /networks /organizations signed a Public Statement on the Govt’s COVID-19 response, calling on the government to be responsive to the needs of the people and to change course immediately with regard to their current response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka.

The signatories express their displeasure with the overall response of the government to the recent outbreak of the virus, including how they treated the factory workers; with utter contempt and a basic lack of dignity.

“The virus is not an enemy to be conquered using a military strategy. It is a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions, the likes of which the world has not experienced in recent times.”

They demand the government to recognize, that the discriminatory practices adopted by the government, is putting all the people of the country at risk.

While emphasizing the fact that, it must be informed and managed/lead by medical health professionals and available science when responding to COVID-19, rather than political expediency; the statement makes 10 recommendations to the government.
