NSSP Demands Truth and Justice for the Thousands Who Were Disappeared on International Day of the Disappeared – 2026

The Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) marked the International Day of the Disappeared – 2026 under the theme, “Where are our sons and daughters who were made to disappear by the thousands? The Answer – We are digging up the earth!”

The theme highlighted the decades-long struggle of families seeking answers about their disappeared loved ones, amid the discovery of mass graves in different parts of Sri Lanka. Sinhala and Tamil relatives, particularly mothers who have spent years searching for their missing children, continue to seek truth and justice for enforced disappearances that occurred in both the North and South of the country.

The NSSP emphasised that the mere excavation of mass graves cannot be the answer to these demands. The discoveries must lead to thorough investigations to establish the identities of the victims, determine the circumstances of their deaths and disappearances, and identify those responsible.

The party stressed that the government has a responsibility to reveal what happened to people who were taken into state custody and subsequently disappeared. Unearthing human remains is only one part of the process; establishing the truth, ensuring accountability and delivering justice remain essential.

The NSSP’s message emphasizes the importance of the common struggle of Sinhala and Tamil families for truth and justice, regardless of where the disappearances occurred or the ethnic identity of the victims.
