Protest in Colombo Demands Truth and Justice for Sri Lanka’s Mass Graves

A protest demanding truth, justice, and accountability for the mass graves identified across Sri Lanka was held on 30th July 2026 in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station, with participants placing particular emphasis on the ongoing investigations into the Chemmani mass grave.

The demonstration brought together trade union leaders, left political activists, human rights defenders, religious leaders, civil society activists, and members of the public. Protesters called for credible and transparent investigations into all mass grave sites and urged the authorities to ensure justice for the victims and their families.

During the protest, speakers stressed the importance of uncovering the truth about those who disappeared during different periods of Sri Lanka’s history and ensuring that investigations are conducted independently and without delay. They also highlighted the need to preserve evidence, uphold the rights of victims’ families, and bring those responsible to justice through due process.

The protest concluded with a renewed call for truth, accountability, and justice, with participants emphasizing that the search for the disappeared and the demand for answers must continue until the victims and their families receive the justice they deserve.
