NSSP Congratulates Dr Navanethem Pillay on Winning the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) warmly congratulates Dr Navanethem Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts to promote peace and international law.

A distinguished South African jurist, Dr Pillay has dedicated her life to defending human rights, challenging discrimination and advancing international justice. Her work in the struggle against apartheid and her contributions to international criminal justice have made her an important figure in the global fight against impunity for serious human rights violations.

Her connection with Sri Lanka is particularly significant. During her visit to the country in August 2013, when she served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, she met victims of the conflict, including families of the disappeared, and drew international attention to the continuing suffering of people affected by the war. Her insistence that the end of fighting did not mean the end of suffering remains deeply relevant to the continuing struggle for truth, justice and accountability in Sri Lanka.

The NSSP welcomed Dr Pillay during her visit to Sri Lanka, recognising the importance of her engagement with the country’s unresolved human rights issues and the demands of victims and their families.

The NSSP extends its sincere congratulations to Dr Pillay on this prestigious recognition. Her award is also an encouragement to all those who continue to fight for human dignity, equality, accountability and a world in which international law applies equally to all, regardless of power or privilege.
