Pongu Tamil Declaration remembered 25 years on

Students and members of the Tamil community gathered at the University of Jaffna on Saturday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the historic Pongu Tamil Declaration.

The remembrance was held within the university premises, where participants assembled at the Pongu Tamil memorial pillar to honour the declaration and the mass movement it inspired.

The declaration, first articulated in 2001, came to symbolize Tamil political demands and calls for self-determination during a period of intense conflict in the country’s north.

University students lit oil lamps and laid floral tributes at the memorial, which has since become a focal point for remembrance and reflection on Tamil political aspirations and resistance.
